About myself
I am a happily retired "school marm" serving 43 years in the elementary classroom. I don't call myself a 'teacher', but an 'educator.' I am also a word nerd. The etymology of those words hints at their deeper meaning. Teacher comes from the Latin, techare-meaning to point out. I had many teachers in my schooling who Loved to point out my errors. Educate, on the other hand, is also from the Latin, educare-meaning to lead. Good educators lead their pupils to self-discoveries, and I hope I was one of those.
After I left the classroom I needed something else to do to keep me sane, so I volunteered at my church's Food Pantry where they distribute free fresh groceries to hundreds of the hungry in San Francisco. Eventually I was asked to join their Board of Directors, and now am one of the Co-Directors. Each Saturday, I organize a band of eager volunteers to set up the groceries we have purchased from The SF/Marin Food Bank. Last Saturday 45 volunteers, passed out tons of fresh food to 468 households in San Francisco. So, I have gone from a LEADER, to a FEEDER.
